Simon Hill - The Proof Is In The Plants

1hr 11min

24 February 2022

Simon Hill is famous for his work in the plant-based lifestyle movement, his predilection for scientific evidence and his in-depth podcast where he interviews experts in nutrition, and other health disciplines.

We invited Simon to appear on Discernable as a ‘meta-analysis’ of all the studies he has read and reviewed, and all of the expert interviews he has conducted. Simon’s podcast is an excellent resource to dive deep into the details of a particular issue but we wanted to hear from him about the broad momentum of the plant based movement, healthy nutrition, and world agriculture.

As with all of our interviews, we were looking for the ‘why’ and explored Simon’s way of thinking, how to determine good science from bad, and whether he would hypothetically follow the science away from a plant-based lifestyle.

What we found was surprising and refreshing.

Cosmetic Surgery and Self Identity

Cosmetic Surgery and Self Identity

1hr 16min

21 February 2022

Why do people get cosmetic surgery? Is the trend increasing? How does this inform, enhance or distort our self-identity? With a special appearance by Dr Gemma Sharp (body image expert from Monash University), we delve into the world of Body Dysmorphic Disorder and explore exactly why Matt (and millions of others) went ‘under the knife’.

In this conversation we slammed together two worlds: the founder Australia’s largest hair restoration surgery clinic – Mikko Myllymaki, and Dr Ben Buchanan – a clinical psychologist and academic who specialises in Body Dysmorphic Disorder.

With mental health experts warning against the surging popularity of cosmetic surgery, and surgeons fighting to give the people what they demand, are these two worlds at war? Or do they rely on each other in the long run?

Being 'Sneaky' with Nathan Finochio

42 Minutes

18 February 2022

Nathan Finochio is a Christian teaching pastor, author, speaker, musician and founder of online seminary TheosU. I sought his thoughts on the Bible’s instruction to ‘obey the governing authorities’ in Romans 13 in light of increasingly authoritarian regimes.

I also sought his review of how the Christian church has handled the response to Covid-19, especially when secular government directions and laws are challenging the historical separation of church and state (an idea that the church should no longer tell the the government how to govern, and the government should not tell the church how to church).

Canada: It's For Your Own Good

16min

Last night we reported on how Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is ‘keeping Canada safe’ by freezing the bank accounts of people who are protesting in ways he does not approve of (watch at https://discernable.io/trudeau-keeps-canada-safe).

Tonight we take a dive into who the warring parties are – what are the truckers’ demands? What is their motivation? And who exactly is Trudeau and the many leaders like him? Why do they press their populations so hard with progressive kindness?

Herein is a lesson for us all. When voting, beware those who come claiming ‘salvation’. It’s only ever on their terms. Do not fear devils, fear men masquerading as angels:

“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. They may be more likely to go to Heaven yet at the same time likelier to make a Hell of earth. This very kindness stings with intolerable insult. To be “cured” against one’s will and cured of states which we may not regard as disease is to be put on a level of those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals.” C.S. Lewis

Trudeau Keeps Canada Safe

In what seems like hyperbole from a dystopian nightmare novel, Canada has declared it will freeze bank accounts (without court orders) and cancel the insurance of protestors who do not protest according to what the government deems a ‘legal’ protest.

The widening of Canada’s terrorism financial laws to control crowdfunding and cryptocurrencies in Canada will be PERMANENT and will not end at the conclusion of the Emergencies Act.

In a stunning display of double speak, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reassures Canadians that he will always support Canadian’s right to protest, to express their frustration and ‘anger’ even against the government, and that he will always defend their freedom of speech.

Microsoft: How to Woke

4min

Have you seen the new ‘intersectional’ introductions being embraced by Microsoft presenters? In November 2021 at Microsoft’s ‘Ignite’ conference, speakers began their presentations with a description of their race, gender, pronouns and physical appearance.

At first glance it appears to be an accessibility measure to assist the visually impaired but it turns out that is not why intersectionality is being encouraged at Microsoft.

Nic Fillingham from Microsoft (who appears in the video) directed the Washington Free Beacon Newspaper’s inquiries to an explanatory video claiming that stating your race and visual appearance before speaking will ‘help fight racism, sexism and classism’.

Lengthy land acknowledgements were included at Ignite, having come into vogue in previous decades at institutions. Stating gender pronouns have also gained popularity in recent years at institutions and are now taking off in the corporate world.

Let's Talk Virtue Signaling with Dr Cameron Murray

The Discernable Interviews

Let's Talk Virtue Signaling with Dr Cameron Murray

1 Hour 38 Minutes

1 February 2022

Dr Cameron Murray returns to Discernable to talk virtue signaling and group psychology. As an economist specialising in human behaviour, corruption and property, he conducts research and experiments on the ‘groupish’ behaviour of humans and how those groups are formed, maintained, and dismantled.

A key ingredient of any human ‘group’, ‘tribe’ or ‘crowd’ is the signals they employ and spread to new converts. Group ‘signaling’ explains much of the pandemic reaction we witness today in both government and populations, especially as both health experts and governments openly admit that science is not the determining factor of their policies. The latest admission from NSW and VIC figures is that the performance art of QR code check-ins helps to soothe the anxious in our community, so even though they are now ‘useless’, we should continue the theatre anyway.

https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2022/jan/27/qr-code-check-ins-useless-in-australias-omicron-wave-but-experts-urge-for-them-to-stay

‘Groups’ form around these sort of signaling behaviours precisely because groups use signals, and signals create groups. Just like Victoria’s ‘creeping assumption’ that killed ~800 people in 2020, the current circular feedback loop is a fertile nursery for the many ‘sides’ you see society divided into today.

So then what are we to do in this groupish world? Matt discusses with Cameron the best ways to see, to form, and to dismantle groups in the name of classical science, academia, logic and reason.
